Speech By Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen, Permanent Representative Of Turkey To The Oic On The Occasion Of The 95th Anniversary Of The Proclamation Of The Republic Of Turkey
Distinguished Guests, Friends of Turkey,
Dear Turkish Nationals,
Excellencies, Ambassadors, Permanent Representatives and Consul Generals,
Representatives of the Host Country, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,
Esteemed Officials of the OIC Institutions,
I would like to welcome you all on the occasion of the 95th Anniversary of proclamation of the Republic of Turkey.
While making great strides in providing freedom, equality, opportunities and welfare to its citizens and residents as well as those refugee population, the Republic of Turkey, starting with the leadership President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2002, have developed and established an enterprising and humanitarian foreign policy.
This is a proactive, conscientious and idealist foreign policy which embraces peace, security, human dignity and welfare for all throughout the World by working together with other countries on the basis of mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity taking its inspiration from history, humanitarian and Islamic values.
In Turkey’s enterprising and humanitarian foreign policy, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as the common voice of the Ummah, is an important component. We always consider the Organization, as the indispensable common institutional framework of our unity and solidarity. In our efforts and initiatives within the Organization, we are motivated with a sense of responsibility and duty to advance our joint causes and interests, such asenhancing humanitarian assistance, development cooperation, protection of Muslim Minorities, tackling conflicts, and defense of cause of Palestine and Al Quds. With this perspective, President Erdogan, as the Chair of the Islamic Summit, has taken two major initiatives in the past year in defense of cause of Palestine and Al Quds.
In the face of attempts to change the status of Al-Quds al-Sharif, the 6th Extraordinary Islamic Summit was held in Istanbul on 13 December 2017. The Summit, which was organized in seven days, gave a strong message with the participation of 18 Heads of State. The Summit was also a historic event for declaring East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine. We also immediately and decisively brought this matter to UN General Assembly and with the resolution adopted on 21 December, international community declared that any decision or action to alter the status of Al-Quds is null and void.
Steadfastness of the Ummah was demonstrated once again in the face of brutal Israeli attacks on peacefully protesting Palestinian civilians in last May. In only three days we convened the Seventh Extraordinary Islamic Summit on 18 May 2018. We demonstrated our reaction to this brutality and called upon the international community to hold accountable the perpetrators. Our call for an emergency session in the UN General Assembly was instrumental in receiving the support of international community. The resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 13 June 2018 was a step forward on protection of Palestinian civilian population.
With these two Summits, we displayed our solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters at the highest level and in the most strongest way. We will definitely continue to do so.
OIC also maintained its united and principled stance on the tragedy of Rohingya Muslim Community. Turkey played a leading role in mobilizing the Islamic world and international community in the face of unfolding tragedy and grave persecution against Rohinghas following 25 August 2017.
We greatly value our relations and cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank, which is one of the most successful institutions within the OIC system. By means of active and successful offices of the Bank in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey is now at the top of the list of countries, according to the total amount of projects approved by the Bank since 1976. We believe that with the recent reform and decentralized structure of the Bank our cooperation will flourish.
The support of our Hosting Country has also a share in all these achievements. Therefore, I would also like to express heartfelt thanks to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their hosting the headquarters of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation and the Permanent Missions.
Taking this opportunity, I would like reiterate our most sincere gratitude and appreciation to great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic, his fellow fighters and those who exerted utmost effort for the birth of the Republic.
